Smoke Break

This canvas has been around since my days @ 819 Gibbard Ave. We were constantly creating in that chaotic atmosphere. In that era where most of my sketches never satisfied me, I would have 50 shitty aimless drawings maybe keep 2. I would start all these canvases with no completion in sight. No real sleep schedule, wandered at night to climb abandoned spots and throw tags with the roommates and friends who stopped by from time to time. I would go to sleep and wake up to my items being tagged up. As annoyed as I may have been I understood that impulsive need to carve letters into a clean surface.

One night we came across sheets of nostalgic light bright patterns and I started to paste them on this canvas I've painted some minimal layers. Aimless need to paint something, but with the frustration of not knowing where to take it it sat for  5 years untouched. In 2020 I found this book cataloging cigarette ads. I repainted these photographs and images, including the iconic nuns having a smoke break.

After having it on view for the summer of 2021, I had a few offers that never came infruition and made me frustrated with the tire kicking. I decided to give it back to the source. My good friend Hannah joined me and we set it on fire.
